The year 1994 saw another development of the Tdi engine, the 300Tdi. While the 200Tdi had been based on the old 19J Diesel Turbo, nearly every part of the 300Tdi was new. It shared the same capacity and identical performance figures to its predecessor, but it was quieter and more refined. The 300Tdi wasn’t without its problems, though.
The 300TDI is a fairly tough engine but it shouldn’t overheat if everything else cooling wise is in good order Either there is an underlying issue with the cooling system or he is has shafted you on the rebuild

Basically it may be worth your while following the wire back in the engine bay, if it's same as mine it goes across the front of the engine and then back along the driversside of the block and joins up with a bunch of other wires, they are likely to be taped together and possibly have a plastic cable tidy thing

The engine has done 132,000 miles and I thought it was running quite well. I'd not expected to notice much of a difference but I've been really surprised - in a good way.. It seems that when the belt was last changed the modified 300Tdi timing kit wasn't installed (although it should have been) so I still had the original 1995 bearings, pulleys
